History

“BERLINWALL” is currently a serialized project managed by Takafumi Tsukamoto and Akira Yamazaki.

In April 2021, under the guidance of Professor Akihito Aoi in a sub-seminar (commonly known as “Research Groups (RG)”) of the Meiji University Architecture History and Theory Laboratory, an assignment was given under the theme of “Research on Multiplicity.” Professor Aoi stated, “There are various approaches to multiplicity—union, junction, division, cohabitation, and so on. Based on these paradigms and the assigned readings, devise your own research project.”

In this context, the team of Naoto Katsube, Takashi Kawashima, Jiang Yilin, Taisei Kubota, Takafumi Tsukamoto, Akira Yamazaki, and Li Junkai selected Edgar Wolfrum’s Berlin’s Wall: A History of the Division of Germany as their assigned book and launched the project “How Was the Berlin Wall Constructed?” With the aim of reinterpreting the Berlin Wall as architecture and visualizing its concrete form, they participated in an in-lab review session in August 2021. There, they presented a half-scale mock-up of the Berlin Wall along with multiple drawings.

Subsequently, the project was renamed “Berlinnokabe” when Tsukamoto and Yamazaki continued their research and writing activities, prompted by the drawings. They are currently hard at work producing a total of five installments in this serialized project.
